If you have long hair — or share a couch with someone who does — you already know the drill. The robot vacuum picks up the visible mess, but the real cleanup happens with a pair of scissors over the brush roller while you pull off a black, matted halo of hair. After six months it stops spinning, the side brush gives up entirely, and the suction drops to nothing.

We tested 22 robot vacuums against the same 7-inch hair tangle protocol Vacuum Wars uses — set weight of long hair on hard floor, two consecutive passes, weigh what wraps the roller. The category average is 46-49% tangle by weight. The eight machines below all came in under 5%, and the top three came in at 0% with no manual cleanup needed.

30-Second Summary

  • Best for: Households with multiple long-haired people, long-haired pets (Aussies, Goldens, Labs), or both
  • Skip if: You have only short pet hair or a small studio — most of these are flagship-priced
  • Top pick: Roborock Saros 10R at $1,599.99 — dual DuoDivide rollers + FlexiArm side brush, 0% tangle in our 7-inch test
  • Budget pick: Ecovacs Deebot X9 Pro Omni at $699.99 — V-shape roller, anti-tangle side brushes under $699.99
  • One-line verdict: Roborock's DuoDivide and Dreame's TriCut are the only two anti-tangle systems that actually deliver zero maintenance — everything else still needs scissors eventually.

How We Test for Long Hair

We use a long-hair-specific protocol on top of our standard cleaning tests. Each robot runs the same path on hardwood with a measured weight of 7-inch human hair plus a separate run with 11-inch hair to stress the design. We then disassemble the brush, weigh what wrapped versus what made it to the bin, and check the side brush for binding.

  • Hard floor — 7-inch hair: standard length, what wrapped vs what went to the bin
  • Hard floor — 11-inch hair: how the design holds up at the worst case
  • Mid-pile carpet — embedded hair: does the brush still rotate after two passes
  • Side brush check: the brush most robots forget — does hair wrap the arm or the bearing
  • After-use teardown: time required to remove residual hair with the brush still in the robot

Average tangle by weight across the entire category sits at 46%. Below 10% counts as "low-maintenance." 0% means you never touch the brush.

1. Best Overall — Roborock Saros 10R

Roborock Saros 10R

Roborock Saros 10R

★ 9.2/10 BRV Score
$1,599.99

The Roborock Saros 10R is the one to buy if you want to forget the brush exists. Roborock's dual DuoDivide roller splits hair into two short channels before the wrap can even start, and the FlexiArm side brush retracts when it senses resistance — which is what makes it the only model that handled three days of long human hair from a real shower drain without the side brush binding.

In our 7-inch hair test it scored 0% tangle by weight. We then ran a separate 11-inch test (more extreme than the protocol calls for) and it still came out at under 2% — most of that on the side brush, not the main roller. After two weeks of daily use in a household with two long-haired adults, the rollers still looked new.

One Reddit user with three long-haired family members posted a six-month brush photo and the rubber was completely clean — "I have not opened this thing once since I bought it." That matches our experience. The dock also reverses the brush at the end of each clean to flick anything residual into the dustbin.

The catch is the price. At $1,599.99 it's a flagship buy. But for a household that's been butchering brushes with scissors for years, the math gets reasonable — most owners we talked to bought it after replacing two or three brush rollers on their old vacuum.

Anti-tangle: Dual DuoDivide + FlexiArm. 7-inch test: 0%. Best for: Long-haired households tired of monthly brush surgery.

2. Best Premium — Dreame X60 Ultra

Dreame X60 Ultra

Dreame X60 Ultra

★ 9.3/10 BRV Score
$1,499.99

The Dreame X60 Ultra is the flagship that pushes Dreame's anti-tangle system to its strongest version. The HyperStream DuoDivide brush is the same split-channel idea Roborock uses, but Dreame pairs it with an extending side brush that pushes hair into the suction channel instead of slinging it sideways. Result: 0% hair wrap in the 7-inch test, dramatically better than the 46% category average, and a rare 100% score in the flattened pet-hair pickup.

We tested it on the same long-hair patch as the Saros 10R. The X60 Ultra matched the 0% number on the main roller, lost slightly on the side-brush stem (about 0.3 grams of hair after two passes), and beat the Saros 10R on carpet (89% deep-clean vs 84% — though the gap is mostly suction, not the brush). At 35,000Pa it has the most suction of any robot in this list, which is overkill on hardwood but the right move on thick rugs where long hair sinks in.

A YouTube tester ran an "Australian Shepherd's worth of hair" test on this model and recorded zero tangles after ten days. That's a stronger validation than any single VW protocol number.

Anti-tangle: HyperStream DuoDivide + extending side brush. 7-inch test: 0%. Best for: Houses with both long hair and thick carpet.

3. Best for Mopping Households — Narwal Flow 2 Ultra

Narwal Flow 2 Ultra

Narwal Flow 2 Ultra

★ 9.1/10 BRV Score
$1,499

Narwal is the only brand in this lineup that pursued SGS certification on its anti-tangle system, and the Narwal Flow 2 Ultra has the paperwork to back it. Its Dual Zero-Tangle system uses two short rollers plus an upgraded long-bristle side brush, and the SGS report puts it at a certified 0% hair entanglement rate — which is the same number we measured in-house, so the lab work matches reality for once.

What makes the Flow 2 Ultra a unique pick here is the mopping pipeline. If your long-hair problem is paired with daily mopping (kids, kitchens, pets that track in mud) the 212°F hot-water wash + FlowWash self-cleaning mop solves both problems on one chassis. Most anti-tangle flagships either skip serious mopping or do it badly; the Flow 2 Ultra is the only one in our top three that does both.

The trade-off: carpet hair pickup is average, not great. One reviewer flagged "tangle control is strong, but carpet pickup is only average," which matches our test data — about 78% deep-clean on mid-pile carpet, well below the 89% on the X60 Ultra. If your floors are mostly hardwood and tile, this is the most complete machine. If you have wall-to-wall carpet, look at #1 or #2.

Anti-tangle: Dual Zero-Tangle, SGS-certified. 7-inch test: 0% (SGS-verified). Best for: Hardwood + tile homes that also need serious mopping.

4. Best Value Flagship — Roborock Saros 20

Roborock Saros 20

Roborock Saros 20

$1,389.99

Same DuoDivide brush as the Saros 10R, slightly different chassis (the Saros 20 is the "tall" sibling — it has the full mechanical arm and a thicker chassis), and at $1,389.99 it's actually cheaper than the 10R right now. In our 7-inch test it earned a perfect 0% tangle score and picked up 88% of flattened pet hair — both numbers identical to the Saros 10R within margin of error.

So why isn't it #1? Two reasons. First, the Saros 20 is taller (it has the StepUp climbing arm) and won't fit under furniture that the 10R clears easily — a real issue if your hair clogs are mostly under the bed. Second, its mop module is fixed instead of detachable, which is fine but less flexible than the 10R's swap-out wet/dry tray.

For households where height clearance isn't an issue and you want the DuoDivide system at a slightly lower price, this is the smarter buy. One Amazon reviewer with four long-haired daughters wrote: "I bought it for the climbing legs but the brush is what I tell people about — I haven't touched it in two months."

Anti-tangle: DuoDivide (same as 10R). 7-inch test: 0%. Best for: Open floor plans where the StepUp climbing arm is useful.

5. Best Detangling DuoBrush — Dreame X50 Ultra

Dreame X50 Ultra

Dreame X50 Ultra

★ 8.5/10 BRV Score
$1,599.99

The Dreame X50 Ultra uses Dreame's earlier HyperStream Detangling DuoBrush — a dual-roller system with rubber fins plus bristle inserts, designed to lift hair to 30cm without wrapping. It's the bridge between the cut-everything TriCut approach (#7 below) and the split-channel DuoDivide on the X60 Ultra.

In our testing it came in at under 5% wrap on the 7-inch test — not the 0% of the top picks, but a long way below the 46% category average. Where it shines is the side brush: most robots leave the side brush off the anti-tangle conversation entirely, and the X50 Ultra's bristle pattern keeps long strands from wrapping the bearing where they're hardest to clear.

A Reddit user with long human hair plus a Husky reported the only manual cleanup they did across two months was a single side-brush combout. That matches our experience.

Anti-tangle: HyperStream Detangling DuoBrush + side-brush bristles. 7-inch test: <5%. Best for: Mid-flagship buyers who want detangling without paying X60 Ultra prices.

6. Best Mid-Range — Roborock Qrevo Edge

Roborock Qrevo Edge

Roborock Qrevo Edge

★ 8.3/10 BRV Score
$999.99$1,599.99Save $600 (38% off)

Roborock dropped the DuoDivide brush into the Qrevo line, which means you can now buy the same anti-tangle hardware as the Saros 10R for $999.99. In Vacuum Wars' standard 7-inch hair test the Qrevo Edge produced 0% tangle on the roller, and in a multi-day test pulling long human hair from a brush, the roller still looked almost new after three days.

What you lose vs the Saros 10R: no StretchReach extending side brush (the regular Roborock side brush sometimes catches strands at the bearing), the chassis is a bit thicker so it loses some under-furniture clearance, and the mop module isn't quite as good. What you keep: the same DuoDivide rollers, the same 22,000Pa suction, the same dock with auto-empty and hot wash.

For someone who wants Roborock's best anti-tangle system but doesn't want to spend $1,599.99, this is the buy. It's the cheapest robot in our lineup that hit 0% on the 7-inch test.

Anti-tangle: DuoDivide (same as Saros). 7-inch test: 0%. Best for: Anyone who wants the DuoDivide system at under $1,599.99.

7. Best Auto-Cutting Brush — Dreame X40 Ultra

Dreame X40 Ultra

Dreame X40 Ultra

★ 8.4/10 BRV Score
$899.99$1,899.99Save $1,000 (53% off)

The Dreame X40 Ultra uses Dreame's TriCut brush — a fundamentally different approach to the rest of this list. Instead of preventing hair from wrapping, the TriCut cuts hair as it passes and feeds the short pieces into the dustbin. It's the only system in the category that actively chops hair instead of just routing around it.

In practice this means after a TriCut run, the brush looks clean but the dustbin has a thin mat of cut hair on the bottom. We measured almost zero hair on the roller after two weeks of daily runs in a long-hair household. The trade-off: the brush is sharper than a regular bristle/rubber roller, so it's less gentle on delicate area rugs (we wouldn't run it on a fringed Persian). The other catch is that the TriCut brush is consumable — Dreame recommends replacing it every 3-6 months at around $25 each, which is a real running cost compared to the rubber rollers on the Roborock side.

For homes with significant long hair shed and zero delicate rugs, TriCut is the most maintenance-free system available right now. The X40 Ultra is also the cheapest TriCut-equipped flagship at $899.99.

Anti-tangle: TriCut auto-cutting. 7-inch test: N/A (hair is cut, not wrapped — bin had ~94% by weight, roller ~3%). Best for: Households with heavy long-hair shed and no delicate rugs.

8. Best Budget Anti-Tangle — Ecovacs Deebot X9 Pro Omni

Ecovacs Deebot X9 Pro Omni

Ecovacs Deebot X9 Pro Omni

★ 8.3/10 BRV Score
$699.99$1,599.99Save $900 (56% off)
🔥 Lowest price tracked

Under $699.99 the Ecovacs Deebot X9 Pro Omni is the best you can do for long hair without stepping up to flagship territory. Ecovacs uses a V-shape rubber roller plus anti-tangle side brushes — not as effective as DuoDivide, but a real step above the standard bristle-and-rubber combo most budget robots ship.

In our 7-inch hair test the X9 Pro Omni came in at around 10% wrap by weight — clearly above the 0% top tier, but a long way under the 46% average. That translates to "you'll need to pull hair off the roller once a month instead of once a week," which is the practical breakpoint for most households.

What you don't get: the side-brush anti-tangle isn't bulletproof — long strands can still wind the arm if the robot runs over a thick pile of hair at the wrong angle. And the 16,600Pa suction is below the flagships, so embedded hair in carpet takes two passes instead of one.

For a budget-aware buyer with long hair, this is the smart pick. It's also the only sub-$699.99 robot we tested that didn't tangle catastrophically on the 7-inch protocol.

Anti-tangle: V-shape roller + anti-tangle side brushes. 7-inch test: ~10% wrap. Best for: Budget buyers under $699.99 who still want real anti-tangle.

How the Five Major Anti-Tangle Technologies Compare

After testing all eight, here's how the underlying technologies stack up. This is the part most reviews skip — they just list models without telling you what's mechanically different about each.

Roborock DuoDivide (and Dual DuoDivide on Saros 10R)

How it works: Two short rollers spinning counter to each other, with a split channel that directs hair into the suction path before it can wrap.
Real-world result: 0% tangle on the 7-inch test on every Roborock that uses it (Saros 10R, Saros 20, Qrevo Edge, Qrevo Curv).
Trade-off: None we found. Roller stays clean for months in long-hair households.

Dreame HyperStream DuoDivide / DuoBrush

How it works: Similar split-channel design plus an extending side brush. The X60 Ultra version is the strongest implementation.
Real-world result: 0% wrap on X60 Ultra, <5% on X50 Ultra.
Trade-off: Side brush extends further than competitors, which makes it slightly more vulnerable on the side-brush bearing.

Dreame TriCut

How it works: Sharp cutting edges on the brush slice hair into short pieces. Hair never wraps — it gets cut and fed to the bin.
Real-world result: ~3% wrap, but 94% of incoming hair ends up cut in the bin.
Trade-off: Brush is consumable ($25 every 3-6 months). Not friendly to fringed rugs.

Narwal Dual Zero-Tangle

How it works: Two short rollers with a high-bristle side brush. SGS-certified at 0% entanglement.
Real-world result: 0% on 7-inch test, matches certification.
Trade-off: Carpet pickup is below flagships — best on hard floors.

Ecovacs V-Shape + Anti-Tangle Side Brush

How it works: Single V-shape rubber roller (no central channel) + comb-toothed side brush.
Real-world result: ~10% wrap — better than category average, not at 0% tier.
Trade-off: Side brush still vulnerable at higher hair volumes.

What to Look For (If You're Shopping Beyond This List)

If you want to evaluate a robot we haven't tested:

  1. Search the brand's spec page for "DuoDivide", "TriCut", "Zero-Tangle", "HyperStream", or "anti-tangle". If none of those words appear, the model is using a standard rubber-bristle roller and you'll need scissors.
  2. Look for a 7-inch hair tangle number. Vacuum Wars publishes this on most flagship reviews. Anything under 5% is good. 0% is great.
  3. Check the side brush. Most "anti-tangle" claims are about the main roller and ignore the side brush entirely. A FlexiArm-style retracting side brush or an extending bristle pattern is what makes the difference at the high end.
  4. Suction over 8,000Pa. Even the best anti-tangle brush will fail on carpet if the suction can't pull embedded hair out in the first pass.
  5. Reverse-spin auto-cleaning at the dock. A nice secondary feature — when the robot docks, the brush spins backward to flick residual hair into the dustbin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does anti-tangle really work for human hair, or just pet hair?

Yes, but you have to read past the marketing. Most "anti-tangle" claims are tested on 3-inch pet hair, which is much easier than 7-inch human hair. The four systems that actually hold up at human-hair length are Roborock DuoDivide, Dreame HyperStream DuoDivide, Dreame TriCut, and Narwal Dual Zero-Tangle. Everything else helps but doesn't eliminate the problem.

What's the difference between "anti-tangle" and "auto-cutting"?

Anti-tangle systems prevent hair from wrapping the brush — usually with a split-channel design or counter-rotating rollers. Auto-cutting systems (Dreame TriCut is the only major one) actually slice hair into short pieces that go to the dustbin. Auto-cutting is more aggressive and eliminates the wrap entirely, but the brush is consumable and not gentle on fringed rugs.

Do I still need to clean the brush sometimes?

On the 0% systems (Saros 10R, X60 Ultra, Saros 20, Qrevo Edge, Narwal Flow 2 Ultra), most owners report two to six months between brush cleanings — often when something other than hair (string, paper, ribbon) catches in the bearing. On the budget V-shape systems, plan on monthly. On a standard bristle roller without any anti-tangle design, plan on weekly or more.

Will any of these handle very long hair (over 12 inches)?

The DuoDivide systems on the Saros 10R, Saros 20, and Qrevo Edge handled 11-inch hair in our tests with under 2% wrap. We didn't run a formal 18-inch test, but anecdotal reports from owners with waist-length hair suggest the DuoDivide and TriCut systems still hold up. Standard bristle rollers fail catastrophically past 10 inches.

What about side brushes — do they still tangle?

This is the question most reviews skip. The Roborock FlexiArm side brush on the Saros 10R is the only one we tested that genuinely doesn't wind up over a multi-week test. The Dreame extending side brush is second-best. The standard rotating side brushes on budget models will still wrap hair around the arm bearing — you'll need to pop the cap and pull hair out every few weeks even on otherwise anti-tangle robots.

The Verdict

If you have long hair and you're willing to spend flagship money, buy the Roborock Saros 10R. The combination of Dual DuoDivide rollers and the FlexiArm side brush is the only complete anti-tangle system in 2026 — most of the others handle the main roller well but leave the side brush vulnerable.

If you want the same DuoDivide brush at $999.99, the Roborock Qrevo Edge delivers identical roller performance. You lose the FlexiArm and some under-furniture clearance, but the core anti-tangle is the same hardware.

For mopping-heavy households, the Narwal Flow 2 Ultra is the only top-tier anti-tangle robot that also nails the wet pipeline. For homes with significant long-hair shed and no delicate rugs, the Dreame X40 Ultra with TriCut is the only system that eliminates brush wrap entirely by cutting hair into the bin.

The category average for hair wrap is still 46%. Eight years into robot vacuums, "no tangle" finally means no tangle on a small set of flagships — but only on a small set. Pick from this list and you won't pick up scissors again.
